Project Overview
The client, a large office complex in Coventry, was undergoing significant refit and refurbishment works. Built with a glass roof that had served the building for over 25 years, the office complex was beginning to experience issues due to ageing materials. With seals failing and spacer bars separating from the glass, the roof’s deteriorating condition necessitated urgent intervention to prevent further issues.
Challenges
Replacing the ageing roof glazing presented several logistical and technical challenges:
- Age and Condition of Materials: The glass units were showing signs of degradation, with seals failing and the deteriorating condition contributing to additional wear on the structure.
- Access and Reach Requirements: The glass roof is situated in the centre of the building, requiring a crane with an extended outreach for safe and efficient access.
Solution
Our approach was carefully designed to overcome these challenges and ensure the project was executed safely and efficiently:
- Specialised Equipment Selection: We opted to use a self-erecting tower crane, which provided the necessary outreach to access the central roof area. This crane was essential for lifting the large glazing units into place securely.
- Skilled Installation Team: A dedicated team of four skilled professionals carried out the replacements. Using roof access systems, the team was able to reach the glass panels directly, facilitating a smooth installation process.
Safety Considerations
Throughout the project, we adhered to strict safety protocols, considering risk hierarchies to prioritise the safety of all involved. This careful planning ensured a well-executed project with minimal disruption to the ongoing refurbishment activities.
Results
The project was completed successfully, with the old failed units removed and 2 new double glazed units installed.
